A Happy Place

NEW RELEASE Oct. 2016 – At the end of this Mākena, Maui rainbow, sunrise shades bring hues of
happiness – with the true colors of a beautiful new day.  Out of the clouds
a rainbow bursts its magic arc of light, colored by the sunrise.  A pot of
gold is discovered in seeing the distant colors of reflected light perched
above, as the morning mist is heated by the sun.  Beneath this heavenly
footprint across the sky, dancing dolphins glide with pride – a reflection
of the diversity of life.  Let this ocean rainbow, filled with ancient
promise, float you to a happy place!  Original Oil on Canvas Pre-sold Commission 20″ x 30″

Clearing Squall

16″ x 32″ Original Oil On Canvas.  This painting reveals my love for the beauty in the clouds through a clearing squall at sunset over  Kahakuloa, Maui.  I think it is quite fortuitous that I started this painting long before I would eventually celebrate my very special marriage ceremony celebration there on 10-10-10.   With just a few hues of color this painting weaves fantasy with reality and brings you to a dramatic place where heaven meets earth and pours its blessings out on all of mankind.

Hoʻokipa Beach Park on Mauiʻs North Shore is world famous for windsurfing and surfing.  From the scenic lookout, shallow reefs are revealed as a mosaic of color, when the white waves wash away.  Sugar cane fields and the West Maui Mountains line the endless horizon of ocean blue.  Mid-day heat is cooled by the misty sea spray; like a welcome embrace of hospitality.

Kahakuloa Squall

Kāʻanapali Sands

Kāʻanapali Sands
Strolling the golden sands of Kāʻanapali Beach at noon, beach-goers, snorkelers, and cliff jumpers enjoy this seaside playground; brushed with tiny waves foaming like champagne on the beach. An unexpected surprise comes out of a wet pocket, and on bended knee a promise of engagement begins at the landmark Black Rock, known to Hawaiians as Puʻu Kekaʻa. In the distance, clouds gather across Lānaʻi but there is always the promise of sunny days on the sands of Kāʻanapali.
Commissioned by a local Maui couple celebrating their 10th anniversary!  It was created as an ultimate surprise gift to commemorate their life together since their engagement here 10 years ago.  The 5 tiki torches represent their 5 children…so symbolic!  If you look even closer you may find the profile of Kahekili– the Maui Chief Ruler who cliff dived here for a sport in days of old.   There are also Hawaiian petroglyphs hidden in the rocks.

Lahaina Harbor Sunset

11.5″ x 15.5″ Original Oil On Canvas.  Lahaina Harbor Sunset –  Lahaina is such a historic area and important harbor since ancient times.  I love going to the Lahaina Harbor to take the boat over to Lanaʻi for the day.  One trip in particular was unforgettable and as we came back to the Lahaina Harbor at sunset, the clouds lit up on the ocean reflections bringing me an image I could not resist painting with my own feelings of the day.  This painting features the tranquil waters at a Lahaina Harbor Sunset.

Lehua Hula Sisters

16″ x 32″ Original Oil On Canvas (SOLD).  Liko Lehua translates into lehua bud.  Famous in song and dance in Hawaiʻi, the lehua flower is a symbol of love, land, and of course the deep reds most resemble Pele – our legendary Volcano goddess.  I noticed one day how a cluster of flowers almost appeared to be dancing together, so I thought I would do a painting of these lehua, reflecting on my hālau and my lehua hula sisters!

Natureʻs Rhythm

11″ x 14″ Original Oil On Canvas.  Koi fish are so beautiful and vibrant.  In this painting I wanted to feature that against a stark background to show their illusive nature.  Koi symbolize perseverance and strength of purpose.  Because of its strength and determination to overcome obstacles in life, it stands for courage and the ability to attain high goals.  As I watch the Koi fish swim, I see a rhythm in life that only nature creates.  This is Natureʻs Rhythm.

Puʻunēnē Sugar Mill

16″ x 32″ Original Oil On Canvas.  This is a familiar local sight on Maui.  It is a big piece of our island history and what remains of the “Plantation Era” as the last sugar mill of Hawaiʻi!  Puʻunēnē was once a thriving town, but today is little more than this unique landmark – The Puʻunēnē Sugar Mill.   I can never get tired of driving past this sugar mill, so I had to do a stylistic painting that would do the justice of reflecting both the past and the present of this unique part of Mauiʻs history.

Text Print: Children Learn What They Live

I first saw this poem hanging in the waiting room of my local car mechanic shop.  I really liked it so I did some research and found out it was written by Dorothy Law Nolte.  “Children Learn What They Live,” originally written to fill Mrs. Nolte’s weekly family advice column in the now-defunct Torrance Herald  in 1954, has been reprinted in 30 languages and probably appeared more than a few times in “Dear Abby.”  “I simply wrote it and put it out there, where it has apparently moved through the world on its own momentum,” Mrs. Nolte told the Los Angeles Times earlier this year.

Text Print: Hawaiian Marriage Blessing

I was inspired to write this Hawaiian Marriage Blessing when Duke and I first got engaged over 10 years ago.  FIrst, I wrote it in Hawaiian language, finding the kaona or hidden inner meanings in the thinking of Hawaiian language.  Then I did the English translation.  I have had many people and ministers contact me to read this at wedding ceremonies and I have no problem with that.  I am blessed to have the words here that others want to share at such special life moments.  I hope you like it and find someone who would love it too!

Text Print: The Golden Rule Of Living

The Golden Rule is arguably the most essential basis for the modern concept of human rights in which each individual has a right to just treatment, and a reciprocal responsibility to ensure justice for others.  While there are many different versions, they all basically point to the same thing! This is the one I learned as a child so I translated it into Hawaiian language.

The Legend Of The Taro

19″ x 23″ Original Oil Pastel.  This painting was inspired by the taro plant, also known as kalo in Hawaiʻi, and itsʻ central role in Hawaiian mythology.  Taro is the older sibling of man so there is strong familial relationships between the plant and the people, which reinforces an environmental awareness as well.  Here depicted are the working taro farmers with the goddess Haumea looking on with her ipu (gourd drum) while in the mist rises voices carrying on the legend and story of the taro.  For the artist, who was named after a legendary Taro farmer on Molokai, this portrait holds a special place in connection with the land and its people.  “Getting to know Taro is getting to know who we are.  Taro is more than a staple of our diet; itʻs a symbol of our culture,” says Rachael.
